EURODIV third Conference: “Diversity in cities: Visible and invisible walls”

This is the first announcement and call for papers for the Conference on “Diversity in cities: Visible and invisible walls”, to be held at University College London (UCL), UK on 11-12 September 2007.
Diversity is a key feature of European societies. European integration, global migrations, the ageing of the population, and changing gender roles have shed light on diversity and put it on the agenda. EURODIV organises a set of Conferences on the understanding of diversity and its dynamics through an interdisciplinary and cross-national approach. The third EURODIV Conference takes the social arena as the unit of analysis of cultural diversity. Focusing on cities, it studies the interaction between urban space, the dynamics of identity formation, the construction of cross-cultural relationships and the emergence of cultural dialogue. The Conference provides an opportunity for diversity scholars to discuss the state-of-the-art of research and to envisage possible alternative scenarios of researchspecifically within European contexts.
If you are interested in submitting a paper, please send an e-mail to Valeria Papponetti (valeria.papponetti@feem.it) by 1st April 2007 including:
1. A 600-word abstract. Please indicate the name, affiliation and e-mail address of author(s), who is the contact author, the paper title, and max 5 keywords;
2. The application form (attached) duly filled in. The application form can also be faxed at +39 02 52036946;
3. Full CV of the applicant(s);
4. A copy of the applicant(s) ID. The copy of the ID can also be faxed at +39 02 52036946. Grants for multiple authors will be considered, depending on funds availability. If you wish to apply for a grant and do not have a paper to submit, please send an e-mail to Valeria Papponetti (valeria.papponetti@feem.it) by 1st April 2007 including:
1. A motivation letter (max 600 words) that explains the reason why you would like to participate in the Conference. Please indicate your full name, affiliation and e-mail address;

Incomplete submissions or submissions sent after the deadline will not be taken into consideration. The final decision will be taken by 1st May 2007. Researchers selected for participation should submit their full papers by 1st August 2007 (max 8K words).

Qual è il carattere della città europea agli inizi del nuovo millennio? Un paesaggio urbano continuo che tende ad aggregarsi in nuove formazioni metropolitane, o una costellazione di identità irriducibili che imparano a competere tra le città-mondo? O forse queste due condizioni insediative insieme e simultanee? Città un tempo dominanti nei rispettivi paesi vedono ridimensionata la loro importanza, mentre acquisiscono centralità e assumono inediti ruoli territoriali città di medie dimensioni ubicate in regioni di frontiera, in territori di nuovo sviluppo o in corrispondenza di snodi di reti brevi e lunghe che si stanno formando in un nuovo spazio continentale.

I contributi più utili all’approfondimento del tema verranno presentati alla XI Conferenza nella parte dedicata alle sessioni tematiche.

Il comitato scientifico della SIU darà comunicazione agli interessati dell’accoglimento delle proposte d’intervento entro il 18 Marzo 2007.

First International Conference of Young Urban Researchers - Lisboa

The First International Conference of Young Urban Researchers (FICYUrb) will take place at ISCTE, in Lisbon – Portugal, June 11th and 12th, 2007. The organization of this scientific meeting was born from the will to create a space of interdisciplinary debate. Young researchers in urban studies that work and develop their researches on cities are expected to play a major role in this scientific meeting dynamic’s. The Conference is intended to be an adequate space to disseminate the most recent academic researches in urban studies from a wide range of disciplinary perspectives of the social sciences.
While encouraging an international scientific debate, the Conference will provide a place of interchange between young urban studies practitioners and senior academics with a wide experience, especially those invited to the Opening and Final lectures in the meeting.

4th International Seminar on Urbanism and Urbanization
CALL FOR PAPERS

The European Tradition in Urbanism – and its Future
The 4th International Seminar on Urbanism and Urbanization aims to address both issues of permanence and change, as well as conformities and differences within urban practices of both a
European and non-European context. A main focus of such a discussion is to establish patterns and
methods of approach, which could provide valuable material for a discourse on the urban, set
against a worldwide perspective.

The theme of the 4th International Seminar on Urbanism and Urbanization will be the European
Tradition of Urbanism – and its Future. Delft University of Technology would act as host for this
event scheduled to take place during September 2007. Since its inauguration as an annual seminar
series, initiated by KU Leuven (February 2004), the discussion and seminar has been marked by
follow–up events arranged by UPC Barcelona (June 2005) and the IUAV Venice (August 2006).
This, the 4th International seminar, will be jointly organized by the Department of Urbanism and
the Delft School of Design, both in the Faculty of Architecture, Delft University of Technology, the
Netherlands
